Het Vergotedok werd begin 20^ste eeuw aangelegd en verving de oude havendokken in de Brusselse binnenstad. Rond het dok zijn industriële activiteiten – vooral bouwmaterialen en schroothandels – gevestigd die een belangrijke werkgever zijn voor laaggeschoolde arbeiders. Er liggen ook drie betoncentrales aan het dok, die veel stof en lawaai produceren. Toch is deze hinderlijke activiteit zo dicht bij het centrum van de stad nodig: de vloeibare betonspecie moet binnen de 45 minuten op de werf aankomen, anders wordt ze onbruikbaar.
