Vergote Dock was built in the early 20th century, replacing the old port docks in the centre of Brussels. Around it are industrial activities – especially building material suppliers and scrap metal businesses – which are a major employer of low-skilled workers. There are also three concrete plants on the dock. These create a lot of dust and noise, but this nuisance-causing activity needs to be so close to the city centre: the liquid concrete must arrive on site within 45 minutes, as otherwise it will become unusable.
