In 1525 wordt het Oud Schepenhuis opgetrokken voor het bestuur van het Ambacht Maldegem. De taken nemen toe en in 1653 krijgt het Schepenhuis versterking van het Oud Stadhuis. Door de eeuwen heen kennen de gebouwen verschillende functies : schepenhuis met raadzaal, herberg, café, gemeentehuis, tekenacademie, bibliotheek, … Ontmoeting vormt steeds de rode draad. Beide gebouwen zijn beschermde monumenten.
