Vlak voor het gebouw van het Paleis der Academiën staat een marmeren standbeeld van Adolphe Quetelet.
Het paleis zelf is een neoclassicistisch gebouw uit 1823-1828. Beeldhouwer Charles-Auguste Fraikin kreeg de opdracht een standbeeld te maken ter ere van Adolphe Quetelet die naast oprichter van de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht ook secretaris was van de Koninklijke Academie van België (waar hij al op 24-jarige leeftijd lid werd) en stichter van de natuurwetenschap der Maatschappij. De inhuldiging van het standbeeld vond plaats op 11 mei 1880.
In dit paleis werd ook de Internationale Astronomische Unie (IAU) opgericht in de zomer van 1919. Deze unie zou onder andere het Carte du ciel project realiseren.
