Justo enfrente del edificio del Palacio de las Academias se encuentra una escultura de mármol de Adolphe Quetelet.
El palacio mismo es un edificio neoclásico construido entre 1823 y 1828. El escultor Charles-Auguste Fraikin recibió la encomienda de hacer una escultura en honor a Adolphe Quetelet, quien además de ser fundador del Real Observatorio de Astronomía también fue secretario de la Real Academia de Bélgica (donde se convirtió en miembro a la edad de 24 años) y fundador de la ciencia natural de la Sociedad. La inauguración de la escultura tuvo lugar el 11 de mayo de 1880.
En este palacio también se fundó la Unión Astronómica Internacional (IAU) en el verano de 1919. Esta unión llevaría a cabo, entre otros, el Carte du ciel proyecto.
