Jacob Van Artevelde wijst in de richting van Engeland. Zijn opportunistische keuze voor de Engelse koning zorgde er in de 14de eeuw voor dat Gent, en bij uitbreiding heel Vlaanderen, grotendeels neutraal en dus welvarend kon blijven in de Honderdjarige Oorlog. Dankzij de 'Wijze man van Gent' bloeide de lakennijverheid als nooit tevoren. 660 jaar nadat hij door rivalen werd vermoord, wordt Gent nog altijd de Arteveldestad genoemd.
