Louise Lateau leefde in Bois-d'Haine. Er is nu nog steeds een straat naar haar genoemd in Bois-d'Haine. Ze werd bekend omdat ze het best bestudeerde geval van stigmata in België is. Stigmata is het verschijnen van de wonden van Christus op het lichaam. Deze kreeg ze aan haar 18de na tal van dodelijke ziektes en ongelukken. Bij haar geboorte kreeg ze pokken, ze verdronk bijna in een sloot toen ze twee was, werd door een koe getrapt toe ze zes was. Aan haar 17de kreeg ze een keelaandoening, abcessen, verlamming en gaf bloed over. Ze lag op sterven maar genas plostseling. Enkele dagen nadien verscheen de stigmata. Ze werd meermalen onderzocht door dokters en wetenschappers maar er is nog geen verklaring voor het verschijnsel gevonden. Ze stierf in 1885 op 35 jarige leeftijd..
Tal van andere personen kregen ook stigmata. De meest beroemde zijn Franciscus van Assisi, Pater Pio en Therese Neumann van Konnersreuth in Duitsland.
