Louise Lateau lived in Bois-d'Haine. There is still a street named after her in Bois-d'Haine. She became known because she is the best-documented case of stigmata in Belgium. Stigmata is the appearance of the wounds of Christ on the body. She received them at the age of 18 after numerous deadly illnesses and accidents. At her birth, she contracted smallpox, almost drowned in a ditch when she was two, and was kicked by a cow when she was six. At 17, she developed a throat condition, abscesses, paralysis, and bled profusely. She was on her deathbed but suddenly recovered. A few days later, the stigmata appeared. She was examined multiple times by doctors and scientists, but no explanation for the phenomenon has been found. She died in 1885 at the age of 35.
Many other individuals also experienced stigmata. The most famous include Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio, and Therese Neumann from Konnersreuth in Germany.
