In de Slag bij Grauholz op 5 maart 1798 stelden Bernese troepen onder leiding van Karl Ludwig van Erlach zich op tegen het Franse leger van generaal Balthasar Alexis Henri Antoine van Schauenburg, hoewel de Bernese regering op dat moment al capituleerde.
De verdedigers van Bern boden, in een eerste ontmoeting bij Fraubrunnen en vervolgens in Grauholz, een beboste heuvelrug dicht bij de stad Bern, felle weerstand. Veel vrouwen, oude mannen en soms zelfs kinderen van de plattelandsbevolking sloten zich aan bij de vechtende Bernese troepen en probeerden hun stad te beschermen tegen de Franse invasie.
