I slaget ved Grauholz den 5. marts 1798 stillede bernesiske tropper under kommando af Karl Ludwig von Erlach sig den franske styrker under general Balthasar Alexis Henri Antoine von Schauenburg, selvom den bernesiske regering på det tidspunkt allerede havde kapituleret.
Forsvarerne af Bern ydrede, i et første møde ved Fraubrunnen og derefter i Grauholz, en bitter modstand. Mange kvinder, gamle mænd og delvis endda børn fra landbefolkningen sluttede sig til de kæmpende bernesiske tropper og forsøgte at bevare deres by mod den franske invasion.
