Schmalkalden is een plaats en gemeente in de Duitse deelstaat Thüringen, gelegen in het Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen. De stad telt 19.501 inwoners.
Op 1 november 2010 kwam Schmalkalden in het nieuws omdat in de plaats spontaan een krater van 20 meter diep en een doorsnede van 30-40 meter ontstond. Volgens de geologische dienst van de deelstaat ging het hierbij om een zinkgat. Een geparkeerde auto verdween in de krater, maar er raakten geen mensen gewond.
