Würzburg is een zelfstandige stad in Beieren. De stad is de zetel van de regering van Neder-Franken en van het Landkreis Würzburg, een belangrijke school- en universiteitslocatie, evenals de zetel van het gelijknamige bisdom en daarmee het geestelijk centrum van Mainfranken.
Met ongeveer 128.000 inwoners is de grote stad aan de Main de zevende grootste stad in Beieren, na München, Neurenberg, Augsburg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt en Fürth. In het jaar 2000 stond Würzburg nog op de vierde plaats; in tegenstelling tot de meeste grotere steden in Beieren, nam het aantal inwoners echter in de onderfrankse metropool niet verder toe. Würzburg is sinds 2018 een van de drie nieuw opgerichte regionale centra van de Vrijstaat Beieren.
