Xanten is een stad en gemeente aan de zuidoever van de Duitse Niederrhein in het noordwesten van de Duitse deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen en behoort tot Kreis Wesel in het regeringsdistrict Düsseldorf. De gemeente Xanten telt 21.521 inwoners op een oppervlakte van 72,40 km².
De gemeente bestaat sinds 1969 uit de volgende plaatsen: Beek, Birten, Lüttingen, Marienbaum, Mörmter, Obermörmter, Ursel, Vynen, Wardt, Willich en Xanten.
