Heidelberg is een grote stad met 159.245 inwoners in de Duitse deelstaat Baden-Württemberg. De stad ligt aan de Neckar, waar deze het Odenwald verlaat en de Oberrheingraben binnenkomt. De voormalige residentiestad van de keurvorst is bekend om haar schilderachtige oude stad, haar kasteelruïne en haar Ruprecht-Karls-Universiteit, die de oudste universiteit op het grondgebied van het huidige Duitsland is. De stad trekt bezoekers en wetenschappers van over de hele wereld aan.
