Chemnitz, van 1953 tot 1990: Karl-Marx-Stadt, uitgesproken als [kaʁlˈmaʁksˌʃtat] ) is de derde grootste stad in de Duitse deelstaat Saksen na Leipzig en Dresden. Het is de 28e grootste stad van Duitsland en de vierde grootste stad in het gebied van voormalig Oost-Duitsland na Berlijn, Leipzig en Dresden. De stad maakt deel uit van de Midden-Duitse metropoolregio en ligt in het midden van een reeks steden in het dichtbevolkte noordelijke voorland van het Elster- en Ertsgebergte, dat zich uitstrekt van Plauen in het zuidwesten via Zwickau, Chemnitz en Freiberg naar Dresden in het noordoosten.
Gelegen in het Ertsgebergtebekken, wordt de stad omringd door het Ertsgebergte in het zuiden en het Centraal-Saksische Heuvelland in het noorden. De stad ligt aan de rivier Chemnitz, die gevormd wordt door de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Zwönitz en Würschnitz in het stadsdeel Altchemnitz.
