De kathedraal van Aken, of de Kaiserdom, vaak aangeduid als "de keizerlijke kathedraal". De kerk is de oudste kathedraal in Noord-Europa. Gedurende 600 jaar, van 936 tot 1531, was de kapel van Aken de kroningskerk voor 30 Duitse koningen en 12 koninginnen. Karel de Grote (Charlemagne) begon de bouw van de Palatijnse kapel rond 792, samen met de rest van de paleisstructuur.
