Dortmund [ˈdɔʁtmʊnt] is een zelfstandige grote stad in Noordrijn-Westfalen en met 587.696 inwoners de negende grootste stad van Duitsland, evenals na Keulen en Düsseldorf de derde grootste stad van Noordrijn-Westfalen. Dortmund maakt deel uit van de metropoolregio Rijn-Ruhr met ongeveer elf miljoen inwoners, naar oppervlakte en aantal inwoners de grootste stad in het Ruhrgebied en wordt beschouwd als het administratieve, commerciële en culturele centrum van het oostelijke Ruhrgebied. De stad bevindt zich in Westfalen en maakt deel uit van het bestuursdistrict Arnsberg.
