In de vroege jaren '90 was Görlitzer Park een vervuild terrein dat toegankelijk was voor het publiek. Deze leegstand leidde ertoe dat de locatie in de zomer van 1989 werd bezet door de Mutoid Waste Company, een anarchistische kunstcommune uit Londen. De locatie werd deels gekozen vanwege de nabijheid van de Muur. Op een gedenkwaardige gelegenheid creëerden de schrootmetaalartiesten een "Vredesvogel" contraption met een vogel die hoog in de lucht hing en in staat was om over de spoorrails naar het grenspunt op de brug te rollen en, in een gebaar van vrede richting de DDR, de vogel te tonen aan degenen in het oosten.
