De Justizvollzugsanstalt Attendorn werd opgericht in 1968 op delen van het terrein van de abdij Ewig bij Attendorn in het Sauerland in Noordrijn-Westfalen. In de JVA Attendorn worden gevangenisstraffen in zowel open als gesloten regime aan mannen opgelegd.
In 1967 kwamen de gebouwen van de abdij Ewig in het bezit van de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen, die daar in 1968 de eerste open justitiële inrichting van de deelstaat oprichtte. Van 1978 tot 1988 werd in verschillende fasen de huidige Justizvollzugsanstalt gebouwd, die op 25 november 1988 officieel werd geopend met een feest van de JVA Attendorn.
