Het station Neumünster is het knooppunt tussen de lijnen Neumünster–Flensburg, Neumünster–Heide, Hamburg-Altona–Kiel, Neumünster–Bad Oldesloe, Hamburg-Altona–Neumünster en tot 1985 Neumünster–Ascheberg. Het is het belangrijkste station van de stad Neumünster en wordt in 2011 door de Deutsche Bahn AG in categoriegroep 2 ingedeeld.
Het station werd in 1844 gebouwd aan de eerste spoorlijn van Sleeswijk-Holstein van Altona naar Kiel. Al in 1845 kwam de lijn naar Rendsburg van de Rendsburg-Neumünsterse Spoorwegmaatschappij erbij, door de Altona-Kieler Spoorwegmaatschappij werd in 1866 de lijn naar Ascheberg en verder naar Neustadt in Holstein en in 1875 de lijn naar Bad Oldesloe en in 1877 uiteindelijk de lijn naar Heide door de Westholsteinische Spoorwegmaatschappij. De AKN bereikte Neumünster in 1916, maar de treinen eindigden voorlopig op station Neumünster-Zuid.
