De abdij Ottobeuren is een benedictijner abdij en was een abdijvorstendom binnen het Heilige Roomse Rijk.
Volgens de overlevering werd de abdij in 764 gesticht. Karel de Grote en zijn vrouw Hildegard worden vermeld als weldoeners. Keizer Otto I stelde het klooster vrij van rijklasten. Onder abt Adihelm werd een kerk gebouwd. Sinds abt Rupert werden ook niet-adellijken tot het klooster toegelaten. Sinds abt Koenraad waren de abten rijksvorst in 1299. In 1356 kwam de voogdij over de abdij aan het prinsbisdom Augsburg.
