Het twaalf kilometer lange Berlijn-Spandauer scheepvaartkanaal verbindt de rivieren Spree en Havel. Het kanaal is een federale vaarweg en ligt volledig binnen het Berlijnse stadsgebied. Van de Spree tot aan de sluis Plötzensee valt het onder vaarwegklasse III, van daar tot aan de Havel onder klasse IV. Juridisch behoren ook de federale vaarwegen Westhaven-verbindingskanaal en Westhavenkanaal met het Charlottenburger verbindingskanaal tot de BSK. Het Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Spree-Havel is verantwoordelijk voor het beheer.
Veel Berlijners en toeristen kennen het Berlijn-Spandauer scheepvaartkanaal onder de naam Hohenzollernkanaal. Zo staat het ook op topografische kaarten, tot kort voor het jaar 2000 ook op verschillende stadsplannen, waaronder ook het online-plan van www.berlin.de. In het portaal van Geoinformatie Berlijn staat de oudere naam tussen haakjes achter de officiële: „Berlijn-Spandauer scheepvaartkanaal“.
