De Saalbach is een ongeveer 40 kilometer lange, rechter en oostelijke zijrivier van de Rijn. Hij ontstaat in Bretten in het Kraichgau door de samenvloeiing van de Weißach en Salzach, komt Bruchsal binnen in de Oberrheinische Tiefebene en mondt noordelijk van Philippsburg in de Rijn uit.

De naam Saalbach is ontstaan uit de naam van de bronrivier Salzach en is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van de naam van de stad Bruchsal. Hij is, net als de Salzach, afgeleid van een oude zoutwinningsplaats bij Bretten. In de Lorscher Codex wordt het water in 769 fluvius Salzaha genoemd; verdere naamsvarianten en spellingen waren Saltzach, Salzbach, Saltzbach, Sahlbach, Sal, Saltza of Salza.
