Op de avond van 22 juli 2016 werden in München meerdere mensen doodgeschoten in en rondom een winkelcentrum. Tien personen, onder wie de dader, werden gedood en enkele tientallen mensen raakten gewond. Er werd aanvankelijk gemeld dat er meerdere schutters waren, maar de Duitse politie hield het op één schutter. De hulp van speciale politie-eenheid GSG 9 werd ingeroepen.
Iets voor zes uur 's avonds werd er geschoten in een McDonald's. De dader ging vervolgens naar een winkelcentrum dat in de buurt van de McDonald's ligt. Daar werden meerdere mensen gedood. De schutter werd een paar honderd meter van het winkelcentrum dood gevonden. Hij had zelfmoord gepleegd.
