Frankfurt, tijdens de DDR-periode ook Frankfurt/Oder, is een zelfstandige stad met 56.679 inwoners in de deelstaat Brandenburg. De middelgrote stad ligt aan de westelijke oever van de Oder en is grensplaats met de Republiek Polen. De Poolse naburige stad Słubice ontstond in 1945 uit de Frankfurter wijk Dammvorstadt. Sinds 1999 draagt Frankfurt de aanvullende naam "Kleiststadt" naar haar beroemdste zoon Heinrich von Kleist. Met de heroprichting van de Europa-Universiteit Viadrina in 1991 is Frankfurt weer een universiteitsstad.
