De ruïne van kasteel Virneburg is de ruïne van een hoogteburcht op een 430 m hoge leisteenpiek, omringd door de Nitzbach, boven de gelijknamige gemeente in de Landkreis Mayen-Koblenz in Rheinland-Pfalz.
Het kasteel werd waarschijnlijk in de tweede helft van de 12e eeuw als leengoed van de paltsgraven gebouwd. De eerste vermelding van het kasteel vindt plaats in een akte uit het jaar 1192, waarin de broers Gottfried en Friedrich van Virneburg hun kasteel "Vernenburgh" samen met de graafschap en al het toebehoren als leengoed aan de aartsbisschop Johann I van Trier overdroegen. Dit document is in het origineel niet bewaard gebleven, en de afschrift uit de 16e eeuw bevat formuleringen die rond 1200 nog niet gebruikelijk waren, wat het ofwel een foutieve overbrenging of een vervalsing maakt.
