De indrukwekkende Tränenlay bestaat uit kalktuf. Als het regent, verbindt het koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer zich met het water tot koolzuur. Als deze zure regen op kalkrijk gesteente neerkomt, zoals hier op de Tränenlay, dan lost de kalk op. Deze kalk blijft niet lang zitten bij de bronnen van de Tränenlay, omdat het koolstofdioxide ontsnapt. Door de turbulenties wordt de kalk afgezet in de vorm van een korst. Bovendien versterkt het mos op de rotsen dit proces, omdat het koolstofdioxide aan het water onttrekt en de kalk zich als een korst op het mos afzet. Zo ontstaat over een periode van duizenden jaren kalktuf. Het is een heel licht gesteente met talloze holtes en was in vroegere tijden een geliefd bouwmateriaal, omdat het luchtig, licht en toch stabiel en weerbestendig was.
