De tempel werd gebouwd tussen 1761 en 1781 met donaties van koning Carlos III, financiële bijdragen van de eigen leridanos en ook van bisschop Joaquín Sánchez. Dit was omdat de Oude kathedraal, na de Succesieoorlog, was geconfisqueerd om als fort en militaire vesting te worden gebruikt.
