Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog liet de Franse minister Maginot een verdedigingswerk van kazematten (totaal 58 forten) in het noorden en noordoosten aanleggen. Een zinloze exercitie want er was geen rekening gehouden met vliegtuigen en parachutisten. In Marckolsheim staat het Musée Mémorial André Maginot, niet ver van de Rijn, uiteraard.
