Het paleis van Versailles is het grote paleis van de koningen van Frankrijk, in de stad die zijn naam draagt, in het departement Yvelines, ongeveer 20 km van Parijs. Het werd gebouwd door Lodewijk XIII en vergroot op bevel van Lodewijk XIV. De bekendste van de vertrekken is de Spiegelzaal. Lodewijk XIV verliet Parijs en besloot Versailles te bouwen, als een kleine stad ver weg van de problemen. Het zou verschillende bouwfasen hebben, gemarkeerd door de minnaressen van Lodewijk XIV.
