Thiepval was zeer strategisch gelegen. In WO I kreeg de omgeving van Thiepval het dan ook zeer zwaar te verduren. De frontlijn wisselde hier enkele keren van kant. Al snel in WOI werd het ingenomen door het Duitse leger. Deze vormden de omgeving om tot een indrukwekkend militair bolwerk met een netwerk van loopgrachten. Op 27 september in 1916 kwam Thiepval in handen van de Britten. Maar de verliezen waren enorm. De aanval begon op de 1ste juli in 1916. Op die ene dag alleen vielen 60.000 Britse soldaten, waarvan 40 000 gewonden en gevangen genomen. De Duitsers verloren 1/10 van dit aantal. Die eerste dag van de Slag om de Somme staat gekend als de "the bloodiest day of the British army". In maart 1918 werd het opnieuw ingenomen door het Duitse leger. En in augustus 1918 opnieuw door het Briste leger.
