De Maas ontspringt op een hoogte van 402m op het plateau van Langres en mondt na 891 km in de Noordzee. Het hydrografisch bekken van de Maas besloot een oppervlakte zo groot als België. 1/3 van dat bekken ligt slechts in België zelf.
