Jeanne d'Arc probeerde in 1429 voor Karel de VIIe tevergeefs la Charité-sur-Loire te veroveren op kapitein Perrinet Gressard die de stad sinds 1423 bezet hield. Deze succesvolle handelsplaats was een gewilde buit. Door de stevig gebouwde vestingwerken mislukte deze poging van de Maagd van Orleans echter.
