Chartres ) is een stad en de hoofdstad van het departement Eure-et-Loir in Frankrijk. Het ligt ongeveer 90 km ten zuidwesten van Parijs. Bij de census van 2019 waren er 170.763 inwoners in het stedelijke gebied van Chartres, van wie 38.534 in de stad Chartres zelf woonde. Chartres is wereldwijd beroemd om zijn kathedraal. Deze gotische kathedraal, voornamelijk gebouwd tussen 1193 en 1250, verkeert in een uitzonderlijke staat van behoud. De meeste van de oorspronkelijke glas-in-loodramen zijn intact gebleven, terwijl de architectuur sinds het begin van de 13e eeuw slechts kleine veranderingen heeft ondergaan. Een deel van de oude stad, inclusief het grootste deel van de bibliotheek die verbonden is met de School van Chartres, werd in 1944 verwoest door geallieerde bommen.
