Van 1575 tot 1622 was Aigues-Mortes een van de acht veilige havens die aan de protestanten werden verleend. De intrekking van het Edict van Nantes in 1685 leidde tot zware repressie van het protestantisme, wat zich in Languedoc en de Cévennes in het begin van de 18e eeuw uitte in de "Camisard Oorlog". Zoals andere torens in de stad, werd de Constance-toren vanaf 1686 gebruikt als gevangenis voor de Hugenoten die weigerden zich tot het rooms-katholicisme te bekeren. In 1703 slaagde Abraham Mazel, leider van de Camisards, erin te ontsnappen met zestien kameraden.
