Calais) is een havenstad in het departement Pas-de-Calais, waarvan het een onderprefectuur is. Hoewel Calais veruit de grootste stad in Pas-de-Calais is, is de prefectuur van het departement de op twee na grootste stad, Arras. De bevolking van de stad zelf is 72.929; die van het stedelijke gebied is 149.673. Calais kijkt uit op het Kanaal van Dover, het smalste punt in het Engelse Kanaal, dat hier slechts 34 km breed is, en is de dichtstbijzijnde Franse stad bij Engeland. De Witte Kliffen van Dover zijn op een heldere dag gemakkelijk te zien vanuit Calais. Calais is een belangrijke haven voor veerboten tussen Frankrijk en Engeland, en sinds 1994 verbindt de Kanaaltunnel het nabijgelegen Coquelles met Folkestone per spoor.
