Het Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau ligt in het stadscentrum vlakbij het Parc Beaumont en de Boulevard des Pyrénées en is gevestigd in een gebouw uit 1930 met sobere lijnen. De verscheidenheid en kwaliteit van de collectie maken het tot een van de grote musea van Aquitanië. Opgericht in 1864 op initiatief van de Société des Amis des Arts, is de collectie gestaag gegroeid dankzij legaten, aankopen door de stad en stortingen van de staat.
De stad Pau hecht veel belang aan artistieke ontwikkeling en tentoonstellingen van nationale faam en heeft deze rol versterkt met de oprichting van de Espace des Arts in het stadscentrum, dat het Musée des Beaux-Arts en de Ecole Supérieure d'Art des Pyrénées op dezelfde locatie samenbrengt.
