In de westelijke Vogezen is het fort van Bourlémont een belangrijk element van het verdedigingssysteem van de oostgrens dat na 1871 door generaal Séré de Rivières is opgezet. Het werd gebouwd in drie jaar tijd, van 15 juli 1878 tot 15 juli 1881. De bescherming door aarden blokken van 3 tot 7 meter dik moest het mogelijk maken de impact van met zwart kruit afgevuurde granaten zonder schade te weerstaan.
Dit fort is in zijn oorspronkelijke staat gebleven, waardoor bezoekers het prachtige metselwerk kunnen ontdekken en het leven van een garnizoen zoals het was aan het eind van de 19e eeuw kunnen begrijpen.
