In den westlichen Vogesen ist das Fort Bourlémont ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Verteidigungssystems an der Ostgrenze, das von General Séré de Rivières nach 1871 eingerichtet wurde. Es wurde in drei Jahren vom 15. Juli 1878 bis zum 15. Juli 1881 errichtet. Der Schutz durch 3 bis 7 Meter dicke Erdmassen sollte sicherstellen, dass sie die Einschläge der mit Schwarzpulver verschossenen Granaten unbeschadet übersteht.
Das Fort ist in seinem ursprünglichen Zustand erhalten geblieben und bietet Besuchern die Möglichkeit, das schöne Mauerwerk zu entdecken und das Leben in einer Garnison am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nachzuvollziehen.
