De abdijkerk ligt in het hart van het bos van Compiègne, in het dorpje Saint-Jean-aux-Bois. Ze werd in 1152 gesticht als abdij van benedictijner nonnen door koningin Adelaide van Savoye (weduwe van Lodewijk VI). In 1220 kreeg de abdij een nieuwe kerk in gotische stijl... De abdijkerk werd in de 18e eeuw omgebouwd tot parochiekerk.
Vandaag blijven de kerk, de kapittelzaal en de versterkte poort (de enige overblijfselen van de abdij) over.
