Dit monument, dat in 1962 werd ingehuldigd, werd opgericht met kasseien afkomstig van een kade in de haven van Duinkerke, die tijdens Operatie Dynamo door Britse en Franse soldaten werd betreden.
De Slag om Duinkerken vond plaats in mei en juni 1940 als onderdeel van de westelijke campagne in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tijdens de Duitse campagne in het westen was de stad Duinkerken in Noord-Frankrijk de laatste evacuatiehaven voor de British Expeditionary Force, die in 1939/40 in Frankrijk werd ingezet als onderdeel van de aanvankelijke defensieve strategie van de Westerse Geallieerden.
De Britten en Fransen verdedigden het bruggenhoofd met succes totdat ze meer dan 330.000 van hun 370.000 soldaten evacueerden tijdens Operatie Dynamo.
De stad werd op 4 juni 1940 ingenomen door de Duitse Wehrmacht.
