Parthenay, een opmerkelijke middeleeuwse stad in het hart van de Gâtine poitevine. De stad Parthenay-Larchevêque is gebouwd op een rotsachtige uitloper en staat bekend om zijn goed bewaarde oude centrum met zijn vele vakwerkhuizen. De spectaculaire vestingwerken, kronkelende steegjes en terrastuinen zijn typisch voor de middeleeuwse periode. Als tussenstop op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela kunt u vele religieuze gebouwen uit de Middeleeuwen bewonderen, met name het klooster van Cordeliers en de kerk Saint-Pierre de Parthenay-le-Vieux, waar de monnik Aimery Picaud in de 12e eeuw de Pelgrimsgids schreef. Voorbij de vestingwerken ligt de Gâtine met zijn bewaard gebleven bocage en zijn valleien waaruit vele beken stromen. Een gebied met talrijke charmante dorpjes en gehuchten waar een prachtig traditioneel erfgoed te zien is (wasplaatsen, stenen doorgangen, enz.).
