Dit eiland, grenzend aan Saint-Florent-le-Vieil en Varades, ligt aan de uiteinden van de Loire-Atlantique en de Maine-et-Loire. Tussen twee armen van de Loire, doorkruist door een grens, beslaat het Ile Batailleuse 171 hectare, waarvan 113 in Loire-Atlantique, en is het 4 km lang en 730 m breed.
Als getuige van de Vikinginvasie in de 9e eeuw en verschillende veldslagen (waaronder de Vendée-oorlogen) heeft het Ile Batailleuse een rijk historisch verleden.
