Het bisdom Rochester werd opgericht door Justus, een van de missionarissen die Sint Augustinus van Canterbury vergezeld heeft om de heidense Engelsen in het vroege 7de eeuw tot het christendom te bekeren. Als de eerste bisschop van Rochester kreeg Justus toestemming van koning Ethelbert van Kent om een kerk van Sint Andreas de Apostel (dezelfde toewijding als het klooster in Rome waarmee Sint Augustinus en Sint Justus naar Engeland waren vertrokken) te stichten op de plaats van de huidige kathedraal, die de zetel van een bisschop werd.
