Tijdens Wereldoorlog II was het Duitse leger verbaasd hoe snel de RAF wist dat er vliegtuigen over het Kanaal kwamen. En dat zelfs bij slecht zicht. Men wist niets af van de RADAR-stations die gebouwd waren langs de kust van Dover, en de Britten wilden dat zeker niet onthullen. Vandaar dat de geheime dienst een "legende" de wereld in stuurde als verklaring. Men vertelde dat de Britten heel veel wortels kregen met de stof beta-caroteen dat tot een uitstekend zicht leidde. Recentelijk was ontdekt dat het oog beta-caroteen bevatte, dus het leek niet onlogisch. Nog steeds is deze "hoax" een veelgebruikte uitleg. De relatie tussen het eten van wortels of toedienen van beta-caroteen en een zeer goed zicht is echter nooit aangetoond. Maar we kennen allemaal nog het verhaal...
