Nettlebed staat bekend om de archeologische vondsten uit het Paleolithicum. De plaats werd al sinds de oudheid veelvuldig doorkruist, als doorgang door de Chiltern Hills op de weg tussen Oxford en Henley. Vanaf de 14e eeuw werd Nettlebed belangrijk voor de baksteenproductie, die tot in de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw voortduurde. In het dorp is nog één pottenbakkersoven bewaard gebleven.
