Machynlleth is een kleinstad in het Welshe graafschap Powys, respectievelijk in het traditionele graafschap Montgomeryshire. De stad is een vakantiebestemming en centrum voor de schapenhouderij. De lokale bevolking noemt hun stad ook gewoon graag Mach.
Machynlleth telt 2.200 inwoners en ligt in de vallei van de Dovey aan de voet van een groep zacht glooiende heuvels. Van hieruit zijn zowel de regio rond de Cadair Idris als het Plynlimon-gebied gemakkelijk te bereiken. Tijdens de opstand van 1400 tot 1415 liet Owain Glyndŵr zich in 1404 in Machynlleth tot prins van Wales kronen en bepaalde de stad naast Dolgellau en Harlech als ontmoetingsplaats voor het Welshe parlement in een dan vrij Wales. Daarvan leidt Machynlleth de claim af de eigenlijke historische hoofdstad van Wales te zijn. Glyndŵrs parlementsgebouw is gerestaureerd en uitgebreid en is tegenwoordig onderdeel van een gedenkplaats.
