Er is sterke aanwijzing dat er in de 19de eeuw daadwerkelijk een internationale handel in botten bestond, waarbij ook beenderen van grote slagvelden als Waterloo, Leipzig en Austerlitz naar Britse (en andere) fabrieken gingen om tot mest (bone‑meal) of industrieel botkool (bone char) te worden verwerkt, onder andere in de beenmaalderijen van Doncaster.
Miljoenen bushels aan “human and inhuman bones” werden via onder meer Hull ingevoerd, vermalen in Yorkshire en verder verkocht als fosfaatrijke bemesting.
Historici en conflict‑archeologen wijzen erop dat Europese slagvelden met duizenden oppervlakkig begraven lichamen (soldaten én paarden) een goedkope, geconcentreerde bron van botten vormden, waarbij de Britse eilanden een belangrijke afzetmarkt waren.
