Wiskundige, vader van fractals en vader van weersvoorspellingen Lewis Fry Richardson was van 1913 tot 1916 superintendent van de Eskdalemuir Observatory. Hij stelde een systeem van rasterwerken voor om het weer te voorspellen. Als je de waarden van bepaalde omgevingsvariabelen in het midden van elke rastercel kende, kon je de natuurkundige vergelijkingen gebruiken om hun waarden op een kortere termijn te berekenen.
