De staande stenen van Callanish zijn verbonden met talloze legendes. Volgens de lokale overlevering weigerden reuzen die op het eiland woonden zich door Sint Kieran tot het christendom te laten bekeren en werden ze als straf in steen veranderd. Een andere lokale overtuiging vertelt dat op de ochtend van midzomer de "stralende" bij zonsopgang over de stenen laan liep, "zijn komst aangekondigd door de roep van de koekoek". Deze legende zou een volksherinnering kunnen zijn die de astronomische betekenis van de stenen in herinnering brengt.
